  49.  Q: What is the purpose of comp.archives.msdos.announce newsgroup?

  51.  A: The CAM.announce newsgroup was created the 15th of December
  52. 1992.  It has the following clarified charter which gives it
  53. purpose.

  55.    This moderated newsgroup is for the upload announcements and
  56. related information from MS-DOS archive sites (also called FTP
  57. sites) with Public Domain and shareware material.  The subjects
  58. include the upload announcements via the MS-DOS FTP site moderators,
  59. the MS-DOS sites' periodical summaries, potential policy statements
  60. and downtime warnings, and the MS-DOS FTP site moderators' reports
  61. about the connectivity problems with their archive sites.  Unix
  62. announcements conform only if they directly relate to transferring

  79. channel for MS-DOS upload announcements which the moderators handle,
  80. and other one-way, occasional information relating to MS-DOS archive
  81. sites.  The moderators will therefore not be handling users'
  82. discussion material, questions, and replies.  The unmoderated
  83. comp.archives.msdos.d newsgroup (see below) will cover that aspect.

  94. expired comp.binaries.ibm.pc.archives newsgroup, which should thus
  95. no longer be used, if your site is for some reason still receiving

  100. covers users' reports, questions and discussions about the Public
  101. Domain and shareware programs at the MS-DOS archive sites (also
  102. called FTP sites), and the users' questions about the MS-DOS FTP
  103. sites such as the users' connectivity problem reports.  The group is
  104. also for posting requests/replies concerning where to find such

  116.  Q: What are SimTel and Garbo?
  117.  
  118.  A: While the newsgroup comp.archives.msdos.announce is open for all
  119. MS-DOS archive site maintainers with Public Domain and shareware
  120. programs and other material, at present the most publicized sites
  121. are:
  122.  
  123. SimTel: SimTel, the Coast to Coast Software Repository (tm) is
  124. located on a host that is not directly accessible by anonymous ftp
  125. users.  Its primary mirror site is OAK.Oakland.Edu (141.210.10.117).
  126. SimTel is a huge repository carrying a broad spectrum of MS-DOS and
  127. Windows material.  The Coast to Coast material is regularly
  128. published on CDROMs.  The upload announcements have a special
  129. designator "-" in the comp.archives.msdos.announce subject headers.
  130.  
  131. Garbo: Garbo.uwasa.fi (193.166.120.5) is provided by the Computer
  132. Centre together with the Department of Accounting and Business
  133. Finance of the University of Vaasa, Finland.  Garbo specializes in
  134. areas like quality MS-DOS maintenance utilities, educational
  135. material and Turbo Pascal programming.  Scientific working papers
  136. are a new particular interest.  Contributions are invited.  Garbo's
  137. general mission as a university site is the promotion of rational
  138. knowledge and the enhancement of the users' interest in science.

  142.  Q: How do I obtain the announced files from the MS-DOS archive sites?
  143.  
  144.  A: If you are not familiar with using anonymous FTP or mail servers
  145. for downloading material from the MS-DOS archive sites, you should
  146. contact the maintainer of the relevant site for the instructions.
  147. Take a look at the instructions (given below in the second section
  148. "A2" of this answer) on how to order for example the garbo.uwasa.fi
  149. instructions from Timo Salmi (ts@uwasa.fi).  The SimTel information
  150. is available from w8sdz@SimTel.Coast.NET (Keith Petersen).
  151.    Please note that you should not email the moderator(s) of an FTP
  152. site for advice on another FTP site.  Although the moderators often
  153. cooperate, the individualized queries should always go directly to
  154. the right place.  If you need the moderators' email addresses, see
  155. the MS-DOS FTP site list "garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/pd2/moder*.zip".  It
  156. also contains information about the major mirroring sites.
  157.    Likewise you should pose the questions concerning a mirror site
  158. to the mirroring site's moderator, not to the moderator of the site
  159. being mirrored.  Although mirroring is very welcome and the sites
  160. cooperate, the mirroring is an independent operation by the site
  161. that does the mirroring.

  166. information in the referred instructions is generic:
  167.    "If you do not know how to go about getting material from Garbo,

  169. garbo.uwasa.fi instructions (long, circa 29Kb).  The overseas users
  170. are referred to the various Garbo mirrors at their convenience.  For

  199.  A2: Once you have gotten this material to your host, usually you
  200. must still transfer the packages from your host to your PC.  How to
  201. do this depends on your configuration and the transfer programs you
  202. have.  Giving advice with this part is beyond the scope of this text
  203. and beyond the tasks of MS-DOS archive site maintainers.  If you
  204. have problems in this respect, you should try to get help from your
  205. local support person.
  206.  
  207.  A3: Many if not most programs on MS-DOS archive sites are in a
  208. zipped format, that is the file names have the extension .zip.  To
  209. handle these packages on your PC you'll need to download a program
  210. like pkz204g.exe to your PC.  It is very easy to install once you
  211. have it.  Just type PKZ204G since it is a self-extracting package.

  214. 6. *****
  215.  Q: Something is wrong with the .zip (.zoo) etc package I downloaded:
  216.     I get a CRC error, a "requires PKUNZIP 3.0 or higher version", a
  217.     "zipfile is part of multi-disk archive" message, or whatever when
  218.     I try to process the .zip package I downloaded from an MS-DOS FTP
  219.     site.
  220.  
  221.  A1: 1) Use a binary transfers at all phases. (Both from the FTP
  222.         site to your host and from your host to your PC.)
  223.      2) Use a version 2.04G compatible extractor on your MS-DOS PC:
  224.          "OAK.Oakland.Edu:/SimTel/msdos/zip/unz512x.exe"
  225.          "OAK.Oakland.Edu:/SimTel/msdos/zip/pkz204g.exe"
  226.          "garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/arcers/unz512x.exe"

  228.      3) PKZIP 2.04G compatible Unix (actually multi-platform) version
  229.         by the Info-ZIP programming group is available as

  231.          "garbo.uwasa.fi:/unix/arcers/unzip512.tar.Z"
  232.          "garbo.uwasa.fi:/unix/arcers/unzmake.inf"
  233.         Using the old Unix version for testing 2.04G .zip files on
  234.         Unix can cause false CRC error messages.
  235.  
  236.  A2: In over 99.9% of cases the allegedly corrupt packages are
  237. caused either by the user's failure to transfer the .zip packages in
  238. the binary mode or using an outdated version of PKUNZIP.
  239. In file transfers there are (usually) two phases:
  240.  A) From the FTP site to your host.
  241.  B) From your host to your PC.
  242.  Failure the transfer in the binary mode can cause quite unexpected
  243. error messages like for example "requires PKUNZIP 2.8 or higher
  244. version".
  245.    It is fairly common of the users to claim that they have
  246. transferred in the binary mode, but in fact done so for only one of
  247. the stages!  Usually you transfer the zipped file in two stages.
  248. First from the FTP site to your own (most often Unix) host.  That
  249. transfer must be made in the binary mode.  Second from your host to
  250. your PC.  Also this second transfer must be made in the binary mode.
  251. In particular, if you are using the kermit protocol for the
  252. transfer, you must set the transfer to binary mode at _both_ ends of
  253. the transfer.
  254.    Failing to set the transfer to the binary mode, and using the old
  255. versions of PKUNZIP has caused innumerable false alarms from the
  256. downloaders to the FTP archive site maintainers.  It is not
  257. impossible, but it is extremely rare that a package is actually
  258. corrupt on the FTP archive site.
  259.    In some very unusual cases setting the transfer to binary is not
  260. enough because the byte order of your host and the FTP site might
  261. not be the same.  That is why most ftp programs have a mode called
  262. TENEX, which tells each end to use binary mode but to sort out the
  263. byte ordering differences between the two machines.  If your ftp
  264. program does not have the TENEX command you can make it do the same
  265. thing by issuing these two commands:
  266.  ftp> binary
  267.  ftp> quote "TYPE L 8"
  268. The double quotes are required.
  269.    Some users with .zip problems want to know where to get PKZIPFIX.
  270. It is within the PKZIP distribution package (pkz204g.exe), but using
  271. it will not rectify any of the errors described in the above.
  272.    If you are using a 386 or 486 computer, PKUNZIP may be having
  273. some problems with your machine's BIOS.  You can force PKUNZIP to
  274. NOT use 386 instructions by doing SET PKNO386=ON at the DOS command
  275. prompt to put the variable PKNO386 into your DOS environment.
  276.    There is also a Unix version of unzip in case you wish to look at
  277. the package already at your Unix host.  See Item #5 for the pointer.
  278. If you do not know how to handle tar.Z files, see /unix/ts/0news93.u
  279. for the instructions to make operative a utility distributed as a
  280. tar.Z.  (A tar.Z file must be transferred as binary.)
  281.  
  282.  A3: PKWare blissfully started advertising PKZIP 2.0 in Magazines
  283. already in spring 1992.  PKWare's PKZIP 2.04C was finally released
  284. the 28th of December 1992 and has been since updated to be the
  285. stable "garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/arcers/pkz204g.exe".
  286.    Be warned that there are countless bogus PKZIP 1.20, 2.0, 2.02,
  287. 3.05 and whatever scams floating around.  They usually are hacks of
  288. PKZIP 1.93A beta test version.  Some of them are trojans and / or
  289. carry computer viruses.  There is one exception, 2.06 for IBM (the
  290. company), but it is equivalent to 2.04g.
  291.  
  292.  A4: The most common error with .zoo is using the old 2.01 version
  293. instead of the current version 2.10.  Likewise, for the other
  294. archivers, assure that you have the most recent version.
  295.

  298.  Q: What if the FTP site is busy most of the time?
  299.  
  300.  A: If you have a BSD Unix host consider automated FTP:

  306. This is advisable even if you don't have access problems, since
  307. using batchftp decreases the overhead of being connected.  It is
  308. very convenient anyway once you have managed to set it up. Another
  309. alternative is

  312.    One thing _*NOT*_ to do if an FTP site is busy.  If you have the
  313. FTP capability don't substitute FTP by mail server requests.  The
  314. mail servers cause more load both on the net traffic and the mail
  315. server site's capacity.

  319.  Q: How do I submit programs to the MS-DOS archives?
  320.  
  321.  A: The answer naturally depends on your target site. You should
  322. contact the maintainer of the relevant site for more information.
  323.    For Garbo you can also get the instructions by downloading
  324. "garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/UPLOAD.INF" and "/pc/UPTEXT.INF".  Please read
  325. these files carefully _*BEFORE*_ you upload to Garbo, so that your
  326. own and our time will not be unnecessarily wasted.

  336.  A: SIMTEL20 was closed at the end of September 1993.  The archive
  337. was frozen on the 17th of September, 1993 in preparation for moving
  338. it to a new location.  In the new arrangement the SimTel files are
  339. available from SimTel mirror sites:

  341. a host that is not accessible by anonymous ftp users, however its
  342. files are available by anonymous ftp in directory /SimTel/msdos from

  376.  A1: For information on how to use the SimTel mail server send
  377. e-mail to listserv@SimTel.Coast.NET with the following command in
  378. the body of the message.  Do not attach a signature since it may
  379. confuse servers.

  384. to Mailserv@Garbo.uwasa.fi with the following subject (don't include
  385. the quotes): "garbo-request".  Getting the subject (garbo-request)
  386. right is _*CRUCIAL*_.  Put the following command in the body of the
  387. message.  Do not attach a signature since it may confuse servers.

  401.  Q: What if I do not get any response from a mail server?
  402.  
  403.  A: Contact your own site's system manager, and ask him/her to look
  404. into it.  You must have a returnable mail path in order to use the
  405. mail servers!
  406.    One thing _*NOT*_ to do if you haven't ever gotten a response
  407. from the particular mail server, is sending the same request
  408. repeatedly.  It may reach the server even if the server cannot send
  409. the request back to you, because of your bouncing address.  You'll
  410. just be overloading the mail server.  Please do not do that! To put
  411. it mildly, the maintainers of the target site will not be happy if
  412. you do.
  413.    If you have been able to get files from a mail server, but don't
  414. get the file you are currently requesting, the same applies.  Do
  415. _*NOT*_ send the request over and over again.  First assure from the
  416. CURRENT file lists that the file really is there.  Some programs get
  417. updated fairly frequently, and there may be other similar reasons
  418. for a temporary unavailability, like the site being down at the
  419. moment.
  420.    Summary: Never repeat the same email server request until you
  421. have found out what was wrong.

  427.  A: If you already know fairly accurately what you are looking for,
  428. then before posting you should first look at the file lists of the
  429. major MS-DOS FTP sites, or try the Archie server.  For example the
  430. main file list for SimTel and Garbo are

  440.    Likewise should you need programs for your Unix host to transfer
  441. and handle the files, programs like Zmodem and the various
  442. (un)archiving utilities like unzip, scan the said material, and the
  443. "garbo.uwasa.fi:/unix/UINDEX.ZIP" file list.
  444.    As for the Archie servers, see "garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/ts/
  445. tsfaqn*.zip" again for the pointer.  (But note that the coverage and
  446. an up-to-date status of the servers is not guaranteed).
  447.    This item is definitely not to discourage anyone from asking
  448. relevant questions, quite the contrary.  Contributions in the form
  449. of news postings from all users are welcome and enjoyed.  Asking
  450. appropriate questions in order to find useful PD & shareware MS-DOS
  451. programs _and_ giving informative answers to the relevant questions
  452. is partly what the CAM.d newsgroup is about.  However, it is
  453. required that you know these basics before asking away.  It is
  454. polite towards the other users to have already taken the trivial
  455. preliminary steps.  Do not use posting to comp.archives.msdos.d as a
  456. substitute for first browsing the file indexes.

  458.  A2: If you are quite a newcomer to all this then you'll need the
  459. utilities to unpack the archived files like the .zip files referred

  625.    As for GIFs, that information is not readily available since the
  626. powers that be do not always look benevolently upon using the

  628. is calling BBSes (bulletin boards system).  One pointer to an

  630. selection of GIFs in their /graphics/gif directory.  (That will be
